We offer three types of programs: curriculum-based trips, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) workshops and events, and for-credit travel programs. Our Tour Directors bring these programs to life, delivering an exceptional on-site experience.

About the Role

EduTravel Tour Directors are the on-site leaders who bring our educational travel programs to life.

At EduTravel, we believe travel is an opportunity for students to build confidence, strengthen friendships, and create lifelong memories. For many, these trips become the highlight of their school year, and our Tour Directors play a vital role in making that experience unforgettable.

You’ll lead student groups of up to 55 people, managing day-to-day logistics while ensuring every tour is safe, organized, engaging, and memorable. Our programs are fast-paced and active, often involving long days, significant walking, and travel in a variety of weather conditions. Working alongside teachers and chaperones, you’ll oversee the execution of a pre-planned itinerary, adapt to changing circumstances, and serve as EduTravel’s on-the-ground representative.

Although our Operations Team plans every detail of the tour and provides ongoing support throughout your trip, you’ll be responsible for delivering an exceptional on-site experience.

As a great Tour Director, you will have the qualities of a confident leader with a positive attitude and strong interpersonal-skills. You will also play a key role in fostering a welcoming environment for both students and teachers, leaving a lasting impact long after the tour has ended.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Passionate about travel, learning, and creating meaningful experiences for students
  • Available and flexible to work throughout the year, particularly during our busiest travel periods in the spring and summer
  • Experienced working with youth, students, or groups; experience in education, travel, tourism, recreation, camps, or hospitality is considered an asset
  • Organized, adaptable, and confident managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communicator who can engage groups and share information in a clear and interesting way
  • Reliable, proactive, and comfortable making decisions on the go
  • Confident leader who remain calm and professional under pressure


Key Responsibilities

  • Complete EduTravel Tour Director training (classroom, and on-the-road)
  • Attend a pre-tour briefing with the Operations Team
  • Lead the on-site execution of a pre-planned itinerary
  • Foster a positive group environment for students
  • Manage daily logistics, including transportation, hotel check-ins, attraction entry, meal arrangements, and schedules
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for trip staff, suppliers, and the EduTravel Operations Team
  • Reconfirm reservations and coordinate group meals as required
  • Monitor group dynamics, anticipate challenges, and resolve issues while maintaining a safe and positive experience
  • Share engaging commentary about destinations, history, and local culture throughout the tour
  • Represent EduTravel professionally and build positive relationships with students, teachers, suppliers, and partners throughout the tour

FAQ’s for Tour Director Applicants

Our son had an incredible experience with EduTravel. He learned so much – both academically and a lot of “life learning” too.

We open up Tour Director applications in the fall, with first and second-round interviews taking place January–February. Successful candidates will receive an offer and will be onboarded in March. Mandatory Tour Director training goes on throughout April, and tour assignments begin in May.

EduTravel is committed to long-term relationships with high-performing Tour Directors and strives to recognize experience, reliability, and professionalism through seasonal rate progression when possible.

Seasonal rate increases may be considered at EduTravel’s discretion based on factors including, but not limited to:

  1. Number of seasons worked with EduTravel
  2. Overall performance and reliability
  3. Demonstrated leadership and professionalism on the road
  4. Participation in training and support of newer Tour Directors
  5. Staffing needs based on program demand for a given season

Tour Directors may also graduate in the role by gaining experience in curriculum programs to then be placed with an for-credit program.

Tour Directors receive a daily rate for each full or partial day spent accompanying and leading an EduTravel curriculum trip. For our for-credit trip, Tour Directors will receive a lump sum rate for the trip. Travel, accommodations, and meals are provided by EduTravel while on tour.

EduTravel programs operate throughout the year, with our busiest domestic bus season taking place in May and June. Our for-credit and flight programs also create opportunities during March Break and throughout the summer months.

Tour assignments are based in part on availability, so greater flexibility particularly during our busiest travel periods can mean more opportunities to work. You’ll be asked to provide your availability in advance so we can match Tour Directors with upcoming programs.

Most tours depart from the Greater Toronto Area, which is why preference is given to applicants based in the GTA.

While we look for candidates with relevant skills and the right attitude and a willingness to learn, we don’t expect previous Tour Director experience. Our comprehensive training program is designed to prepare you with the knowledge and confidence to successfully lead student tours!

Our training includes one in-class day followed by one overnight weekend bus-trip to our most popular domestic destinations. Throughout the program, you’ll learn about the student travel industry, effective public speaking and storytelling techniques, group management, and strategies for handling unexpected situations on the road.

You’ll also receive hands-on training in the day-to-day logistics of leading a tour, including hotel check-ins, restaurant procedures, itinerary management, and working with trip staff and suppliers. By the end of training, you’ll be equipped to confidently lead student groups, share engaging cultural and historical commentary over the microphone, and deliver an exceptional EduTravel experience!

Training is mandatory and paid.

As a part-time, seasonal contract position, we cannot guarantee a specific number of working days or trips. We work closely with your availability to assign trips that are the best fit for both your schedule and our program needs.

Once you have successfully completed training, you will receive your initial season schedule at the beginning of the season (May). Additional trip opportunities may become available throughout the season, and with flexibility in your availability, you may be offered additional assignments.

Tour Directors may  follow a progression path from domestic to international programs as they gain experience. Expect to first familiarize yourself with our incredible curriculum programs, working with schools as the EduTravel representative on our domestic trips to Ottawa, Montreal, Niagara Falls, Quebec City, Blue Mountain or Toronto.

Yes. Many Tour Directors have other employment or commitments. Because assignments are seasonal and scheduled in advance, many Tour Directors balance the role with other work, provided they have sufficient availability during peak travel periods.

Tour lengths vary depending on the program. Some tours are single-day experiences, while others last several days or up to three weeks for international programs.
